Quick Facts (Start Here)– Collapse
We are in-network with Aetna, Anthem Blue Cross, Cigna, Blue Shield of California, and United Healthcare.
A typical evaluation includes an interview, testing, and a feedback session, which are usually completed over three to four weeks.
You will receive a written report within 5–10 business days after the feedback session.
When billed to insurance, the evaluation is divided into four parts: interview, testing, integration/analysis, and feedback.
If paying out-of-pocket/without insurance, the cost is $8,160 for the full evaluation.
Because we often have a waitlist, we recommend booking as early as possible.
What is a Clinical Neuropsychologist?+ Expand
A Clinical Neuropsychologist is a licensed psychologist (PsyD or PhD) with specialized training in how the brain affects thinking, mood, and behavior.
Dr. Brandon Heimberg, PsyD, is a UCLA-trained Clinical Neuropsychologist. He provides evaluations for ADHD, Autism Spectrum Disorder, learning differences, memory problems, mood-related concerns, and neurological conditions such as brain injuries or dementia.
These evaluations help guide treatment plans, educational accommodations, and other supports tailored to your needs.
What is a Neuropsychological Evaluation?+ Expand
A neuropsychological evaluation is a comprehensive assessment that helps clarify diagnoses, guide treatment, and provide strategies to support daily life.
Areas typically assessed include:
- Attention and concentration
- Memory and learning
- Problem-solving and executive functioning
- Language and communication
- Visual-spatial skills
- Processing speed
- Emotional, behavioral, and social functioning
Who Should Consider a Neuropsychological Evaluation?+ Expand
A neuropsychological evaluation may be helpful if:
- You are struggling with focus, memory, or organization at school or work.
- You have noticed cognitive changes after an injury, illness, or with aging.
- You are a student seeking documentation for academic accommodations on exams such as the SAT, GRE, LSAT, or MCAT.
- Your psychiatrist, neurologist, or therapist has referred you for diagnostic clarity.
Evaluation Process & Timeline+ Expand
Before Your Appointment: You will complete intake forms through our secure electronic health record, Tebra. Please verify your insurance coverage in advance. Once everything is confirmed, you will receive either a HIPAA-compliant telehealth link (for remote testing) or in-person instructions.
Day of Evaluation: The evaluation begins with a clinical interview (30–60 minutes), where we review your history, current concerns, and goals. A family member or friend may be invited to provide additional insights.
Testing usually lasts 2–6 hours and may include paper-and-pencil tasks, computer-based exercises, and verbal questions. Testing is administered by a doctoral trainee or psychological testing technician under Dr. Heimberg’s supervision.
Telehealth Testing: Please ensure you have a quiet, private space, a stable internet connection, and access to a keyboard and mouse. Glasses or contacts should be worn if needed. Breaks are provided as needed to reduce fatigue.
After the Evaluation: Dr. Heimberg reviews and interprets your results, comparing your performance to others with similar backgrounds. You will return for a feedback session (scheduled within 3–4 weeks), where we review results, diagnoses, and recommendations. A comprehensive written report is delivered within 5–10 business days after your feedback session. This report may be shared with schools, workplaces, or providers.
Preparation Guidelines+ Expand
To ensure accurate results and a smooth process:
- Avoid cannabis for at least two weeks before your appointment.
- Continue taking your prescribed medications.
- Bring or wear your glasses or contacts if needed.
- Dress comfortably.
- For telehealth, test your camera and audio beforehand and choose a quiet, private room.
- Be aware that some evaluations may require multiple sessions.
What to Expect During Testing+ Expand
The testing process often feels like puzzles, memory games, or problem-solving challenges. There are no “pass” or “fail” scores. Instead, the evaluation identifies both your strengths and areas where you may need support. Breaks are built into the process, and your comfort is always a priority.
Documentation & Accommodations+ Expand
Your report can be used to request accommodations at school (e.g., IEP or 504 plans) or for standardized testing (SAT, GRE, LSAT, MCAT). It can also be used to request workplace accommodations under the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA).
Feedback & Follow-Up+ Expand
During the feedback session, we review your strengths, challenges, and what the results mean for your daily life, school, or work. We also provide guidance on next steps, which may include therapy, medical follow-ups, or accommodations.
You will receive your comprehensive written report within 5–10 business days of the feedback session. In some cases, we recommend repeat evaluations every 6–24 months to monitor changes.
What We Don’t Do+ Expand
Heimberg Neuropsychology does not provide ongoing psychotherapy or medication management, although we are happy to refer you to providers who do. We do not conduct forensic or custody evaluations, nor do we provide expert witness testimony.
Payment & Cost Transparency+ Expand
Insurance Billing: If using insurance, the evaluation is billed in four parts: Clinical Interview, Testing, Integration & Analysis, and Feedback Session. Your out-of-pocket responsibility depends on your plan, deductible, and copay. If your deductible has been met, you are typically only responsible for your standard copay.
Private Pay / Out-of-Pocket: For those not using insurance, the cost is $8,160 for a full evaluation. This includes the interview, testing, integration/analysis, feedback session, and the comprehensive written report. Private pay patients receive a Good Faith Estimate in compliance with the No Surprises Act, to be provided after disclosure and prior to the feedback session. A superbill can be provided for possible out-of-network reimbursement. Patients choosing private pay may be scheduled immediately. Please notify us at connect@heimbergnp.com if you’d like to proceed this way.
Example Cost Scenarios+ Expand
- Insurance — Deductible Not Met: You may be responsible for the plan’s allowed amount for each of the four billed components until your deductible is met.
- Insurance — Deductible Met: You are typically responsible only for your standard copay or coinsurance for each component.
- Private Pay: The full cost is $8,160. This includes interview, testing, integration, feedback, and the written report. A Good Faith Estimate is provided.
Because coverage varies, we strongly recommend confirming your benefits and cost-sharing details with your insurer in advance.
